METRO NEWSPAPER REVIEW

[1 Jul 2010 | No Comment ]

Journalist Richard Jackson said, ” Green chicken curry … is the default dish when I eat Thai food and any place worth its salt needs to get it right. This one really hits the spot. The meat was soft and tender and the sauce was fragant - the coconutty base perked up with basil and coriander - and pleasingly spicy. Alongside were stir-fried beef (with a kick of chilli) and pork (with a mild garlic flavour). Both were simple but beautifully cooked dishes …”

Thai Edge celebrates Songkran, the Thai New Year

[31 Mar 2010 | No Comment ]

Thai Edge in Brindley Place will be marking Songkran, the Thai New Year festival next month.

Thai New Year

Thai New Year

Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, is from the 13th - 15th April. The date marks the end of a 12-month cycle and the beginning of a new solar year, as the sun moves into Aries in April.

Songkran is officially a three-day festival. On the first day, firecrackers are usually lit to send the old year on its way and ward off evil spirits, whilst homes and gardens are given a good cleaning. The most important aspect of the day is the cleaning of Buddha images.

The second day belongs to neither the new year or the old year and it is thought to be particularly bad luck to argue on this day. This day is also used to prepare food, which will be given the following day to monks and temples for merit making.

The third day is the equivalent of New Year’s Day in the West. It is also the last opportunity for people to let their hair down and the party starts early and continues until dusk.

Traditionally, celebrations will commence with a Buddhist priest performing a simple good luck ceremony. Buddhist monks will perform a symbolic gesture washing statues of Buddha to bring good luck.

Water is also definitely at the heart of the Songkran festival In Thailand. The enthusiastic water-throwing that fills the streets is symbolic of washing away sins and bad luck at this time, providing a clean slate for the new year ahead. It is normal to see people soaked with water, which is welcome relief from the April heat in Thailand, but not so much in cooler Brum!

How a good curry gave fiery Freddie the Edge

[22 Sep 2009 | No Comment ]

He’s one of the most fearsome opponents in world cricket and now the secret of Freddie Flintoff’s firey play can be revealed: Brummie curry.

hancock

White hot: Hancock can’t confirm Flintoff turned up at Thai Edge withbat in hand, but this is how he would have looked... probably.

Flintoff startled restaurant customers when he bowled into Thai Edge in Brindleyplace for an unannounced dinner.

The Ashes hero treated his wife Rachel and children to a feast after visiting a cinema.

Flintoff couldn’t resist the eatery’s £21.50-a-head Royal Orchid menu and cut a swathe through the top order of chicken satay, spring rolls, prawn rolls and chicken in pandanus leaves.

Following the mixed starters, the England all-rounder swiftly polished off one of the restaurant’s highly recommended green curries with chicken.

As he was on international duty, battling it out against the Aussies in the Third Test at Edgbaston, Flintoff sensibly kept to soft drinks, shunning the temptation of Mekong, a Thai whiskey, a Chang, a potent beer from South-east Asia.

By all accounts, Flintoff’s sweet-toothed missus was smitten with the mango cheescake.

The green curry must have given the star the edge when he went to the crease, scoring an impressive 74 – including ten fours.

Nancy Nathwani, owner of Thai Edge, said Flintoff was impeccably polite and approachable. She told Hancock: “He and his family were absolutely lovely and they were delighted with their meal. “But he was not the only cricketer to turn up that evening. Suddenly all the customers started getting excited because Ravi Bopara walked in. It was a smashing night.”

Typical. You go for dinner at a Thai restaurant, wait for one cricketer to come along, and two turn up at once.
